CONFESSION TIME! “I Just Panicked”

This week, guest Jean Maurie Puhlman not only confesses – but battled – her agoraphobia (fear of public places resulting in panic attacks) to come on the show and share her light with the world online. Ever since she was a little girl, she could recall having panic attacks and fears, never wanting to go out in public, yet not understanding what was wrong with her because no one talked about it; it wasn’t defined. Until she saw a show on agoraphobia and saw people experiencing the very thing she did, she suffered in silence. With her revelation, and her courage, she fought back against her fears and continues to show them who’s boss.
“They didn’t know how to treat fears. I didn’t know what was wrong with me. I thought, gosh I want to be an alcoholic because they know how to take care of that…I couldn’t go to restaurants because I’d have a panic attack. I didn’t go to movies. I just stayed home…So I put an ad in the paper [to start a self help group]. So I got a letter back from a group in Miami Beach that they already started theirs and they said if you can get down here, we’ll help you start your own group. I used my prayers and my affirmations and whatever it took and I got down there. And I walked in and everyone’s going, ‘How did you do that?’ ‘Well, I guess I’m supposed to start my own group.’ I was terrified, believe me. But that is the biggest thing: knowing you’re not alone and that you have support. And you’re not crazy. I don’t regret any of it. It’s made me who I am today and it’s helped me to understand other people more.”
She is truly an inspiration, and I believe that there are more people in this world suffering from different variations of panic attacks than we realize. Have you ever struggled with anxiety or a fear that was debilitating to you? Can you relate to this kind of paralysis? How did you get through it?
What’s YOUR confession?
